Riyadh is a base camp with a skyline attached.

In Jeddah, walk Al-Balad first. Swim after.
The old town is coral rag and teak: four-storey merchant houses with carved rawasheen balconies leaning over lanes barely wide enough for two. Twenty minutes later you can be on a boat over the reef, which is the whole argument for Jeddah in one afternoon.

The Tombs at Hegra
The same masons who cut Petra cut Hegra, 500 kilometres south, and then history left it alone. More than a hundred tombs stand in open desert with their facades still sharp, Qasr al-Farid unfinished and standing by itself. Entry runs on timed permits and a licensed guide, so the visit is booked before you arrive, not at the gate.

The Red Sands
An hour up the Qassim road the gravel plain gives out and the dunes start, iron-stained and properly red in late light. It is the Riyadh weekend: quad bikes, a camel string, tea at a heritage house, and enough dune to lose the road behind you within five minutes of walking.
